The “Around the World Banquet” is a major fundraiser for the “Thirsty World Ministries” led by Brother Willie Diggs (Beta Epsilon Sigma Chapter). Its focus is to provide a cultural outlook on the needs of the community and our world. During the second annual event that was held on Thursday, November 29, 2012, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Brother Ben Otey (Southern Regional Social Action Director) received a community service award for his philanthropic achievements in leading prolific socioeconomic causes in North Alabama.
Some of the contributions that were highlighted were efforts made in developing a community-wide health fair and forum, organizing an anti-bullying effort, leading the local rescue mission monthly service project, organizing teams to assist with the annual Christmas Charities Year Round Project, organizing teams for the annual Leroy Williams 5 & 10k Fundraising Event in raising donations to assist with Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma Cancer research, partnering with the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes and the American Diabetes Association. There were several other awards presented on that special evening including social service professionals in the areas of Social Workers, Teachers, Police Officers, and Nurses who impart so much in our communities.
Brother Otey is truly helping to “Speed Sigmas Cause on its Way.”
