Brother Damon Miller, Sr. was born in Quitman, Georgia on March 9, 1946 and graduated from Fort Valley State University in 1969 and received his Master’s Degree in 1970 from Iowa State University. It was at Fort Valley State University where he became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity at Alpha Pi Chapter on November 18, 1966. In his professional life, Brother Miller had a long and distinguished career in education, first, as a biology teacher in his hometown of Quitman, GA and thereafter in various capacities at Florida A&M University and the University of Florida. His work with the 4H organization led him to be recognized on the state and national levels which include receiving the 4H Professionals Distinguished Service Award in 1993 in Florida and on the national level respectively, and being inducted into Florida 4H Hall of Fame in 2002.

Brother Miller was also a leader at all levels in Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity from his collegiate chapter in the late 1960’s, to chapter President of Beta Lambda Sigma, collegiate advisor to the Alpha Eta Chapter (Florida A&M University), Director of Undergraduate Affairs and State Director (3 years) in the Sunshine State of Florida. Brother Miller served our beloved fraternity on numerous committees as Life Member #455 and gave his all to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He was so very proud of our fraternity and frequently shared his revered experience in meeting one of our Three Founders, Brother Leonard F. Morse. In addition, to have his eldest son and namesake, Damon Miller, Jr. become a member of our wondrous band in 2003 at FAMU was a proud moment for him, especially being at his son’s induction ceremony.

Brother Miller was a pillar in his community as an educator, minister, mentor, devoted husband and father. He was frequently requested to speak at various engagements and his dedication to Phi Beta Sigma was ever so evident as the featured speaker at the 2012 State Conference in Tallahassee, Florida. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and host of family, colleagues and friends inspired by his life and good works. Resolution in Memory of Bro. Damon Miller, Sr.

According to his tender mercy, God, who is infinite in his wisdom, has seen fit to move from our midst our beloved brother in Christ on Saturday, November 24, 2012:

WHEREAS, again a human spirit has taken its flight at the call of the Heavenly Father to the mansion prepared for him from the foundation of the earth by an all-wise and loving God, we pen these resolutions to express our grief to the family.

WHEREAS, the Southern Region of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. hopes that these words may in some way comfort the Miller Family in the loss of Brother Damon Miller, Past International First Vice President and Past Regional Director for the Southern Region, we express to the family and relatives who grieve today our deep sympathy and the reminder that their loss is heaven’s gain.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:

That we, the brothers of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and the Bahamas bow in humble submission to the will of God and commend the bereaved family to him who sees all and knows every heart; and entreat them to console yourselves in the hope of a reunion, that after life’s remaining ills are past, you may be comforted with pleasing rather than sad thoughts.

Be it further resolved that we express to the family and relatives who grieve over their loved one’s loss this day our prayers and the reminder that God’s calendar, these trials and crosses are “But For a Moment”. May the Lord continue to watch over you and strengthen you– is our prayer and may the precious memories of your loved one, keep you on the road that leads to God.

As we express our sympathy to the family, we present them with a copy of the resolution with the reminder that Jesus the Man of Sorrows, understand all that transpires in human experience and that he said: “Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.” (John 11:26)

Humbly Submitted,

Southern Region
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
